RS Vareo Fat Face Racing Circuit at Queen Mary SC The Vareo has sold extremely well since its launch and now the classes racing scene is taking off to follow suit. The second round of the RS Vareo Fat Face Racing Circuit took place at Queen Mary on April 13th with a well received training day on the Saturday. A total of 18 boats took part in the weekend. Vareo sailors enjoyed a great day of racing at Queen Mary SC on the Sunday, being blessed with very un-seasonal weather for April, being warm, dry and sunny, with winds ranging from F3-5. Over the course the wind was quite shifty allowing for some rapid movement up and down the fleet. The wind slowly rose during the day with some big gusts to give some exciting down wind conditions by the end. .The close proximity of the windward mark to the wall of the reservoir provided a testing approach, with many gusts and lulls. Racing was tight in the first two races with places changing frequently between second and mid fleet. Luke Fisher sailed away with race 1, after early good form by Robin Sanders, Richard Oliver claimed second. Jon Lewis, making a guest appearance from the front of the RS200 fleet, showed he had not lost all his Laser skills by flying into a huge lead in race 2. The Race Officer had done a good job of squaring up the course and had set 6 laps for race 2; it was nearly too long for Jon who clung on to win from a rapidly closing Luke Fisher. Luke Fisher had the lead at mark 1 in race 3 with the wind now up to a force 4-5 and he sailed away. Jon Lewis, Richard Oliver and Pete Vincent had a great battle for second pulling well clear of the rest of the fleet. Jon claimed second before trying to demolish the Queen Mary spit whilst crossing the finish line in a cloud of spray unable to get his kite down. Richard Oliver showed 10 stone could compete up wind in breeze to claim third overall whilst Pete Vincent provided much entertainment by capsizing on the last gybe and, while still in the water, guiding his boat to the finish line some 20 yards away before his pursuer could overtake! Despite some new challengers Luke Fisher was able to maintain his winning form, gaining first place overall. Jonathan Lewis, normally sailing RS double-handers, came a convincing second. Third place went to Richard Oliver, who sails at Milton Keynes with Luke and was attending his first open event in the Vareo. Ultra consistent Martin Barrett with three fourths surprisingly finished fourth overall.
